Marian Academy solicits blood as a ‘Gift of Love’
Minister Ramsammy and Shameeza Mangal look on as a student gives blood.
The concept of blood as a gift of love was promoted yesterday at the Marian Academy when the academic institution, in collaboration with the National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS), spearheaded a blood drive.
An estimated 100 units of blood was expected to be derived from that drive said NBTS Co-ordinator, Shameeza Mangal.
According to Mangal, the activity which was engaged for the first time last year was envisaged and streamlined primarily by the students of the school.
The students were instrumental in recruiting the blood donors which included their relatives and friends. Those who had attained the age of 16 were eligible to give blood yesterday once they received permission from their parents or guardians. Last year the event raked in a satisfactory 86 units.
The move which comes in light of the Valentine’s Day celebration is crucial as the NBTS continues to appeal for voluntary donors.
At the moment, the level of blood at the Blood Bank is modest, Mangal disclosed.
