Outer circuit of National Park set to come alive
Cyclists will be in action again today as they wind down a hectic weekend of action. Today from 10:00hrs they will match pedals in the inaugural Cell Smart/Digicel sponsored HIV/AIDS Awareness 20-lap race around the outer circuit of the National Park.
With the top prize set at a whopping $30,000 and the first to sixth place finishes set to cash in, fans can look forward to what will be a very explosive race.
Second place prize is $25,000 with 3rd to 6th attracting $25,000, $20,000, $15,000, $10,000 and $5,000 respectively.
At the launch of the event earlier this week, Country Manager of Cell Smart David Atkinson had stated that the race will be an annual affair and he is encouraging the public to come out in their numbers to witness the race and also to cash in on the many giveaways that will be on offer.
The National Aids Programme Secretariat (NAPS) will also have a presence at today’s event in the form of a booth that will be stocked with information on HIV/AIDS. Persons attending the race are encouraged to visit this booth that will be set up in the compound of the National Park.
The cyclists have gained some valuable practice yesterday and are expected to be primed for the battle at hand.
Yesterday’s winner of the feature 30-lap clash at the inner circuit of the National Park Albert ‘Bertie’ Philander will hope to transfer his winning ways to this race but is expected to face stiff opposition from the star studded field which will include Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams, Warren ‘Forty’ Mc Kay, Lear Nunes, Junior Niles, Enzo Matthews, Christopher Holder, Raymond ‘Steely’ Newton, Daniel Ramchurejee, John Charles, Alonzo Greaves, Robin Persaud and Junior Sportsman of the year Geron Williams among others.
The first three juniors and veterans to cross the line will also be rewarded handsomely. Additionally, prime prizes will be up for grabs on every lap whilst the 5th, 10th and 15th laps will attract special prime prizes.
Among the veterans battling in what will be an open category are Kennard Lovell, Linden Blackman, Andrew Spencer, Phillip Piggott, Robert Beaton, Monty Parris and Aubrey Gravesande among others.
