The much touted mandatory bout for the Women’s World International Boxing Association (WIBA) title between current champion, Shondell ‘Mystery Lady’ Alfred and challenger Corinne Van Ryck DeGroot has taken an interesting twist with the executive committee of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) initiating a purse bid to determine which promoter earns the right to promote the return bout.
The initiative has an historical overtone since this is the first time that such an approach has been taken in the promotion of local bouts. A document signed by Secretary of the GBBC, Francis Abraham, and appearing in yesterday’s edition of this newspaper, under the heading ‘Notice to promoters of purse bid’ invites all interested promoters to uplift the bid package from the offices of Abdool’s and Abdool’s Insurance Brokers, 11 Avenue of the Republic, not later than April 15, 2010. Mr. Abdool said that a small fee would be charged for the document.
The genesis of this bid dates back to September 26 last when Shondell Alfred engaged Van Ryck DeGroot in a ten round bout for the WIBA title. Alfred was subsequently declared as the winner but DeGroot had cried foul citing several inconsistencies in the bout.
She also accused referee Eon Jardine of unfair practices and said that such ploys had caused her to lose the fight. DeGroot’s management team had then asked President of the WIBA, Ryan Wissow to declare the fight null and void and order a rematch. Mr. Wissow had subsequently reviewed the tape and decided that DeGroot’s contentions were not valid enough to strip Alfred of the belt. Instead, he ordered a rematch within a specified time.
That time has since elapsed and with no promoter willing to bear the entire financial burden, the executives of the GBBC has launched the purse bid.
The first encounter was promoted by Holland’s Enterprise Promotions in conjunction with S&S Promotions headed by Stanford Solomon and cost some $10M dollars.
Purse bids are more commonly employed in developed countries where several promoters compete for the right to promote lucrative bouts. Should this initiative prove to be successful, Alfred would once again face DeGroot to establish once and for all who is the fitter of the two and deserves to wear the prestigious accolade.
