Fernandes wins female accolade
West Indies middle-order batsman, Ramnaresh Sarwan and local squash queen, Nicolette Fernandes were voted National ‘Sportsman and Sportswoman of Year’ respectively when the National Sport Commission (NSC) panel met yesterday.
Sarwan edged national distance runner, Cleveland Forde in the voting process, which was conducted among a panel of various stakeholders including members of the NSC, business community, media and sports fraternity, seven votes to five forcing Forde into a runner-up position for the 2009 National Awards.
Fernandes secured eight votes to top female distance athlete, Alika Morgan for the female accolade.
Both Fernandes and Sarwan had won in the senior category before, while Forde and Morgan had previously won in the junior group. Morgan was named the runner-up.
National junior cyclist, Geron Williams came up trumps for the ‘Junior Sportsman of the Year’ prize with seven votes, with squash and badminton player, Jason-Ray Khalil in the runner-up position. It was Williams’ first national award.
Athletics’ CARIFTA Games gold medallist, Jevina Straker was an overwhelming winner in the ‘Junior Sportswoman of the Year’ group with seven votes, leaving Guyana’s West Indies female cricket star, Shemaine Campbell as runner-up.
National Rugby Coach, Laurie Adonis, who is on duty with the senior men’s team in Las Vegas currently, was adjudged ‘Sports Coach of the Year’, defeating the likes of Lennox Daniels (boxing), Carl Ince (Squash) and Wayne Dover (football) among others.
Adonis’ team, the national rugby unit won the ‘Sports Team of the Year’ prize with seven votes. The Golden Jaguars, the national pre-cadet table tennis team, the women Under-19 team and national rifle shooters were also nominated.
Rugby seemed to be on a role when the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) notched up the top ‘Sports Association’ for 2009 award.
The Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation came in for special mention, being the closest challenger for that spot. The Guyana Hockey Board and Guyana Table Tennis Association were among the other nominations.
The Powerlifting Association was voted the most improved association by landslide by the panel.
Guyana Amateur Swimming Association’s, Dr Karen Pilgrim won ‘Female Sports Person of the Year, while Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club’s Hilbert Foster won the ‘Male Sports Personality of the Year’ accolade yesterday.
Kaieteur Sports’ photojournalist, Franklin Wilson won the ‘Sport Journalist/Photographer of the Year’ for second consecutive year, while Stabroek Sports’ Rawle Toney won in the ‘Sports Journalist-Print’ category.
Prime News’ Iva Wharton got the ‘Sports Journalist-Non Print’ award to wrap up the 2009 National Sport Awardees.
The submission made by the Powerlifting Association impressed that panellists and it was recommended that other associations use their model of presentation for future submissions.
The national sports awards will be presented at a special function fixed for March 5 at the National Cultural Centre from 7:00pm.
