…police delay in allowing man to seek medical attention infuriates relatives
Leno Marks, a remanded murder accused, of Westbury, Essequibo Coast, died on Thursday at the Suddie Public Hospital after a prolonged illness. A post mortem examination confirmed that he died of tuberculosis.
Marks was on trial for allegedly killing his brother, Ecliffe Stephens, on June 20, 2006, at Westbury.
He was scheduled to make another appearance on Thursday at the Charity Magistrate’s Court for the continuation of his preliminary inquiry, but was too ill to attend.
His sister, Sharon, said on Thursday, that her brother was transported from the Camp Street prisons in Georgetown to the Essequibo Coast, on Friday last.
She said that her brother’s condition worsened on Monday last and he was subsequently admitted to the Charity Hospital before he was transferred to the Suddie Hospital where he succumbed.
She said that the last time she saw her brother alive was on Monday at the Anna Regina lockups and “he was crawling.”
Sharon said that her brother could not have walked. She is upset that he was still in chains and under heavy police guard, although he was in a stricken state.
She did thank former Chancellor Cecil Kennard who, after meeting with the accused, issued an order that the police allow her brother to access medical attention.
Another sister, Merlene, vented her frustration at the police. She said that had it not been for their negligence her brother might have lived.
The remand prisoner first appeared before former magistrate Maxwell Edwards in 2006.
