The National Relief Committee for Haiti is soon to wrap up operations, according to Head of the Presidential Secretariat Dr Roger Luncheon.
He said that with the declaration on the end of the emergency disaster response period in Haiti, it is anticipated that Guyana’s national committee would wind up its operations.
Over 15 containers of food items, water and clothing have been shipped to Haiti thus far to assist the island nation which was devastated by a major earthquake on January 12.
The amount raised by the Guyana National Committee thus far amounts to over $250 million.
Dr Luncheon said that the government will continue its review of the handing of its direct contributions, as well as those of the Caribbean Community and its organs.
According to Dr Luncheon, at the recently held Suriname meeting of CARICOM’s Bureau of Heads of Government, it was determined that institutional capacity was a major constraint that planners and implementers are likely to encounter in the reconstruction of Haiti.
He said that this concern was voiced by President Bharrat Jagdeo at the meeting. The President noted that the meeting examined a model to provide long-term CARICOM involvement in Haiti.
This long-term engagement has already garnered the support of CARICOM Heads.
The model, which is a health initiative, is being finalised and an agreement was also reached by the Heads regarding the method of financing the long-term involvement in Haiti.
The government of Haiti has agreed for CARICOM to operate a health centre in a Haitian community of about 20, 000 people.
