Finance Minister, Dr Ashni Singh, in his budget presentation on Monday told the House that some $50M will be spent in addition to the $30M which was provided last year to further modernise the air traffic control equipment at the Ogle International Airport.
Upon completion in August, the airport would be capable of receiving Dash-8 series aircrafts. These are the types currently operated by regional airlines such as Caribbean Airlines and LIAT.
Daily flights have since been introduced between Ogle and Zorg-en-Hoop in Suriname.
Additionally, in 2009, some $120M was spent for the procurement of an aircraft rescue and firefighting vehicle. This was expected to reinforce the safety and response capabilities at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.
The Minister said that $149.9M was budgeted for the completion of the Wakenaam airstrip, the construction of the Leguan airstrip, and the rehabilitation of the Kamarang airstrip. The Wakenaam airstrip is still to be constructed.
The money is also expected to be spent for the maintenance of various aerodromes across the country. The government, Dr Singh said, has also allocated some $149.5M to enhance a reliable, safe and efficient ferry service across the major rivers and also to the outlying areas of the country.
The money is also expected to modernise and extend the Parika and Supenaam stellings.
With the extension being done it is expected to improve the mooring of the roll on/roll off ferry vessels which are currently in the design stage.
These vessels are expected to arrive in Guyana some time in 2011.
The rehabilitation of the Georgetown, Leguan and Bartica stellings, the Kumaka wharf and the Kingston Lighthouse should benefit from that intervention.
Another $342 million was also budgeted for the docking and rehabilitation of the Dredge Steve N, Split Barge, MB Baramani, MV Malali and also for the acquisition of spares and navigational aids.
Late year, work commenced on the extension of the runway by a further 2,000 feet to 4,000 feet. A total of $147 M was expended to do this.
