Guyanese woman in court over theft from Brian Lara
CHARGED: Guyanese national Curlis Anderson
A Guyanese woman appeared in the Port-of-Spain Magistrates Court Thursday, charged with receiving a stolen item belonging to retired star West Indies batsman Brian Lara.
Curlis Anderson, 32, of Farouk Lane, El Socorro, appeared before Magistrate Brian Dabideen in the 4A Court.
It is alleged that some time during the period October 16 and February 9, Anderson received one black Sony laptop computer, knowing it was the property of Lara.
The charge was laid indictably and she was not called upon to enter a plea. Anderson is being represented by defence attorney Fareed Ali.
The attorney explained that his client had been living in the country for the past six years and was currently trying to obtain residential status as she was a person of “good character” with no previous conviction or pending matter before the courts.
He said since this was her first charge, Anderson was entitled to bail and he asked the court to exercise its discretion on this matter. Prosecutor Cpl Edward Edmund said he had no objection to bail.
Dabideen granted Anderson bail in the sum of $15,000. Cpl Edward Carmichael is the complainant in the matter which is scheduled to resume on February 23.
Earlier in the day, Annmarie Marcano, the former domestic worker for Lara who is facing charges of larceny, reappeared before Dabideen, this time in the Eleventh Court.
Marcano of Perseverance Road, Maraval, was listed to appear to settle an issue that the magistrate had regarding her bail.
The bail issue was cleared up and Marcano’s $60,000 bail was allowed to stand. The matter is scheduled to resume on April 27 when the trial will officially begin.
