-six GRA offices countrywide conducting examinations
Miners who were worried that they would have to bring their All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) down to the city to have it registered have some respite with the announcement that six areas can be used now to do so.
According to the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA), examinations of the ATVs can now be done at its offices at Lethem, Corriverton, Anna Regina, Linden, New Amsterdam and Bartica.
Owners will have to walk with their necessary import documents to have the ATVs registered with a deadline set for Monday.
According to GRA, riders of the unregistered vehicles found operating after then without the necessary road use licences could be prosecuted by police.
Some time back, authorities had announced that owners of ATVs must have them registered at the city’s Smyth Street offices but this had not gone down well with miners who cited logistical and other factors of coming to Georgetown.
The Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners’ Association (GGDMA) has met with the Ministry of Home Affairs to explore ways to work out how the registration process could be done.
There are literally hundreds of the ATVs in the country and it is used mainly in the hinterland areas which are more inaccessible to other vehicles.
While some of the ATVs are believed to have been smuggled from neighbouring countries into Guyana, still many have been imported legally and never registered since its use is not allowed on the main roadways.
Depending on weight, GRA will be charging upward of $2000 for an annual road licence in addition to the necessary duties and taxes.
