Describing his Office of the President source as impeccable, Alliance For Change (AFC) leader Raphael Trotman says that he is standing by his story that the travel expenditure of President Bharrat Jagdeo over the past two and a half years is nearing $1B.
Trotman was responding to a Government Information Agency (GINA) statement attributed to Finance Minister Dr Ashni Singh, which stated that during the past three years, the average expenditure incurred by the entire Government in any one year on overseas travel has been $200 million.
This amount would have met the cost of travel by the President, all Ministers, Permanent Secretaries, and all Government officials at every level in all Ministries throughout the entire year.
“Consequently, to suggest that the President alone spent $1B on overseas travel over the past two years indicates either that the AFC leadership has not been paying attention to information that the Government has been routinely tabling in Parliament, or that the AFC leadership is incapable of reading and interpreting these documents or, even more worryingly, that despite knowing better, the AFC leadership is intent on misleading the People of Guyana by deliberate misrepresentation, distortion, and fabrication.”
According to Trotman, however, “No one believes any government spokesperson any longer after the lies about the phantom killings, the runaway corruption that is exposed daily and the arrogance of the ‘big ones’ that we see on display everyday…My OP source is impeccable and in any event, the Government by taking almost two weeks to respond has already confirmed the suspicions in everyone’s mind…Too late!”
Dr. Singh has described Trotman’s statements, on the subject of the cost of Presidential travel, made recently by the leadership of the AFC as ludicrous.
