Reduction in road fatalities due to enforcement of rigid regulations – Top Cop

Police Commissioner Henry Greene has credited recent successes in the traffic department to the enforcement of rigid regulations and penalties.
At the time the Commissioner was addressing the opening of the Annual Officers’ Conference at Eve Leary yesterday.
The commissioner stated that in recent years the force has managed to keep road fatality figures down.
He referred to the figures for 2009 and 2008 in which there were 117 and 113 fatalities respectively, compared to significantly higher numbers in previous years.
In addition, Greene noted that the force has charged a total of 18,257 persons for speeding, 197 for driving under the influence of alcohol and 375 for driving and using their cellular phone.
Despite the number of persons being prosecuted for driving with cellular phones, this the commissioner says continues to happen on a daily basis and is responsible for some major accidents.
A total of 1137 persons have been prosecuted for breaching traffic lights, while 454 were charged for having their vehicle heavily tinted and 161 for failing to adhere to sirens.
All this he said has contributed to the force’s successes, while issuing a reminder to all road users to continue playing their role in promoting proper road use.
So far for this year the traffic department has recorded some 12 deaths as compared to 13 for the same period last year.
