Rivalry between the two factions that once made up the Combined Islands have always been a close and interesting affair and when the Leeward Islands and the Windwards clash in their fifth round encounter of the WICB Regional First Class Championship which commences today, at the GCC ground, it promises to be no different.
Both teams are coming off disastrous losses in their previous encounters and must be keen to get back into the reckoning for top honours in a competition that has once again failed to capture the support of cricket fans in the region.
The Leewards who’re on 10 points heading into today’s game looked poised to register their first win in the competition against Trinidad and Tobago after being 115-5 overnight, needing just 87 runs with five wickets intact and two of their most experienced players in Omari Banks and Wilden Cornwall at the crease.
However, from a position of 132-5, they catapulted to a disappointing 156 all out to lose by 46 runs and suffer their second defeat from three matches with one draw.
They failed to handle the tournament’s leading wicket-taker leg-spinner Imran Khan, who was admirably supported by off-spinner Amit Jaggernauth and the Windwards coaching staff will no doubt be thinking about exploiting their weakness to the slower stuff which could see bowlers such as leg-spinner Rawl Lewis, off-spinner Liam Sebastien and Shane Shillingford doing the bulk of the work.
The Leewards batting should centre on opener Montcin Hodge, Keiron Powell, (Captain) Stephen Liburd, Cornwall and Banks.
Their contributions will have to be significant if the Leewards are to press for victory, while the medium pace of Cornwall, who grabbed a five-wicket haul against the Trinis and the off-spin of Banks, will also be crucial in their quest for outright points.
On the other hand, the Windwards with one win and two defeats have looked good in patches in the tournament, but will need more solid performances from their experienced Captain former West Indies opener Devon Smith, who along with Andre Fletcher were the batsmen to score half centuries against the rampaging Barbadians led by the express pace of Tino Best.
They failed to handle the pace and hostility of Best and quickly slid to a 98-run loss after capturing first innings points. Middle-order batsman Sebastian, who hammered a career-best 143 in the same match, must continue that run, while it is known that Lewis can handle the bat as well down the order.
It should be a close affair, especially with both teams knowing fully well that an outright win could bring them back into contention if any of the top four dropping points.
The Windward Islands team will come from: Devon Smith (Captain), Shane Shillingford (Vice-Captain), Rawl Lewis, Andre Fletcher, Nelon Pascal, Lyndon James, Deighton Butler, Donnell Hector, Liam Sebastien, Kenroy Peters, Tyron Theophile, Keddy Lesporis and Creig Emmanuel.
Lockhart Sebastien is the Manager, while Ian Allen will serve as Coach.
Leeward Islands team will be chosen from: Steve Liburd (Captain), Wilden Cornwall (Vice-Captain), Mali Richards, Montcin Hodge, Keiran Powell, Gavin Williams, Omari Banks, Jamaal Hamilton, Justin Athanaze, Lionel Baker, Anthony Martin, Brent Defreitas and Dennison Browne.
The Manager is Hugh Gore, while John Archibald is the Coach.
