The management of Kaieteur News took a conscious decision to halt its Haiti fund, yesterday, in the wake of unwanted attention from the Government.
Earlier this week, a member of the Guyana Police Force, acting under the instructions of Police Commissioner Henry Greene and Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee, visited the offices of this newspaper to inform that the collection on behalf of suffering Haiti was illegal.
The rank concluded that Kaieteur News needed to seek notice at least 30 days ahead. The newspaper, acting on precedent when it collected money on behalf of many suffering peoples, including the relatives of the 11 people who died when gunmen invaded their homes at Lusignan, East Coast Demerara, on January 26, 2008, collected millions of dollars.
But even before the Lusignan atrocity, Kaieteur News, collected millions of dollars for the victims of the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami that struck South Asia and killed thousands, when famine struck Niger, and when earthquake devastated Pakistan-administered Kashmir in 2005. On each occasion the funds were disposed of in a most transparent manner, sometimes in the presence of the government.
Since the earlier approach by the police, there has been no further movement on the part of the state. But the deed has been done. Kaieteur News, keen to avoid any conflict, has decided to halt the fund. The last total stood at $4,515,826.
Managing Director, Glenn Lall, said the sum collected will be publicly handed to a reputable organisation in the full view of the public.
