Six Guyanese and a Jamaican have been arrested by police in connection with a multi-million dollar theft at the Trinidad home of former West Indies cricket captain Brian Lara.
The police said that the Caribbean Nationals, whose names have not been disclosed, had been held at a house that was raided by law enforcement officials on Tuesday.
The police recovered five laptop computers, one of which belonged to Lara, a pair of batting pads and an autographed cricket bat.
Last Tuesday, a safe containing cash, jewellery, clothing and an honorary Order of Australia, which was given to Lara by Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, was stolen from Lara’s home on the outskirts of the capital Port-of-Spain.
Police said that nearly TT$500,000 (US$83,300) in various currencies and half a million dollars in jewellery were in the safe that also contained several tickets for the February 18 concert by American R&B singer Beyonce that Lara’s events company is involved with, as well personal documents and contracts. Earlier this week, a former housemaid of the batting legend appeared in court charged with stealing items from Lara between the period January 2005, and February 3 this year.
Ann Marie Marcano was charged with stealing one bottle of Angostura Master Blend rum, nine Oakley sunglasses valued at US$300 each, five tie pins with ’400’ engraved on them, and other items.
She has been released on TT$50,000 (US$8,300) bail and is due to re-appear in court on today. (CMC)
