Those familiar with the harassment and threats to which this newspaper has been subject in recent times would not have been surprised by recent developments. It was predicted that those opposed to this newspaper would be peering into the cracks to try to find something on which to indict this newspaper.
This newspaper is, however, not going to be deterred by either the reduction of government ads or any investigation, which may be launched into the fund that this newspaper started to help the people of Haiti. This newspaper is proud of the manner in which it has over the years managed the many funds that was launched to help victims of human and natural disasters. The record of Kaieteur News in managing these funds is beyond reproach.
In fact it can be said that this newspaper carries out the most transparent of all fund raising activities since on a daily basis what is donated to the Haiti Earthquake is publicized so that those who contribute can see that their sums have been added to the total funds collected.
Against this background, it needs to be asked why Kaieteur News is being targeted. What are the motives behind the shameless act against this newspaper? Why Kaieteur News alone?
Our newspaper is not the only entity that has raised funds for the people of Haiti. The Guyana Red Cross also raised funds. The State-owned, National Communications Network also raised funds via a telethon, ACDA also raised funds via a telethon on Channel 9. Schools raised funds from their students; churches from their congregations and employers from their employees. The PNCR is also collecting shoes for the people of Haiti. Are all of these persons going to be placed under arrest for not complying with what the authorities believe is the law?
Yesterday’s column effectively debunked the idea that permission was needed for all these initiatives which was in response to the Haiti Disaster. That article argued that permission is only needed for collections done in public place and for house-to-house collection.
So again it must be asked, “Has Kaieteur News been selected for special treatment?” Since no other entity has been targeted then there must be a reason why this newspaper was identified and there must be an intellectual author behind what can only be seen as unnecessary harassment of a media house, which has had a remarkable track record in collecting funds for victims of disasters?
It also needs to be asked as to why all these years no attempt was made to stop the Kaieteur News from raising funds for the many persons it helped, including for the Asian tsunami and the Lusignan massacre. All of these funds were done to the highest standards of transparency and there was a public handing over of the proceeds collected.
How come the authorities never moved to stop this newspaper from collecting these funds but are now moving against the Haitian Fund?
It cannot be that the authorities have suddenly woken up and discovered that the law was being breached. The law is not being breached. And the authorities were quite aware of the law since this very law was used in the past to stop C. N. Sharma from raising funds on his television station.
Nor can it be that this newspaper is overshadowing anyone by its collections. So far we have raised just over four and a half million dollars, far less than what has been raised collectively by the government. So we are not making anyone look bad. Why therefore target Kaieteur News? What is the agenda of those behind this shameful act?
There must therefore be a specific reason for targeting Kaieteur News. And if there is a reason, then there have to be an intellectual author. This newspaper believes it knows where all of this is coming from.
