Dear Editor,
I usually start my day catching up on the news from my native Guyana via your online edition, as well as those of your competitors.
And usually, I feel disgusted at the level of violence that constantly merits front page coverage. But after reading your article “Govt. wants to stop Kaieteur News Haiti fund”, I am appalled that the Ministry of Home Affairs would take up the valuable time of the Police Commissioner in what can only be seen as an obvious attempt to intimidate and suppress a free press, by insisting that your newspaper needed ‘permission’ to seek urgent, life-saving funds to help the people of Haiti during the astronomical disaster they suffered.
Five years ago, Guyana suffered the worst natural disaster in its history, the Floods of 2005. Guyanese from all parts of the globe came together, using our resources to solicit aid to help in the recovery effort. What do you think would have happened if we had to comply with a 30 days requirement from the US Government before sending food and money to our brothers and sisters back home?
Not one of us gave any serious thought that a provision in the law may require us to seek government’s approval before raising funds, because Guyanese were experiencing a national crisis at home. What was important was that we act immediately to alleviate the sufferings of our fellow Guyanese.
Surely the Minister of Home Affairs can understand that Kaieteur News acted in good faith to do the same for the people of Haiti.
I urge Minister Rohee to recall the tremendous amount of aid his ministry and the people of Guyana received during the Floods of January 2005 – from friendly Governments, organisations and individuals, and to show compassion.
Kaieteur News has always been responsible and transparent in its fund-raising efforts, publishing a running tally of the monies collected, and should be commended for this instead. And if the Minister of Home Affairs insists on pursuing this course of action, I say simply but sincerely… Shame on you, Mr. Rohee.
