Dear Editor,
Please allow me to correct a Tony Cozier captioned headline “Gifted adolescents.” The honourable and most reliable cricket correspondent in the Caribbean mentioned that 10 of the 15 West Indians now in Australia for the ODI and twenty 20 series first wore the maroon cap in the Under 19 World Cup.
Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo, Narsingh Deonarine, Runako Morton, Kieron Pollard, Denesh Ramdin, Ravi Rampaul, Kemar Roach, Darren Sammy, Lendl Simmons and Gavin Tonge.
The records will show that of the above mentioned players (Nevisian) Leewards Islands Runako Morton, who was part of the original squad for the second ICC Under 19 World Cup in South Africa 1998, was one of several West Indies players deemed ineligible because of a misunderstanding between the tournament organisers and the WICBC concerning the age limit for the tournament.
Other players disqualified were Guyanese Azeemul Haniff and Eion Katchy; Leewards Tyrone Greenaway, Windwards, and Jamaican Ryan Cunningham.
They were replaced by Christopher Gayle, Daren Ganga, Homchand Pooran, Wade Allen, Navin Chan, Kenroy Martin and Steve John. The original squad selected for ICC second Under 19 World Cup was:
Sylvester Joseph – Leewards Captain Runako Morton – Leewards – disqualify
Tyrone Greenaway – Leewards – disqualify
Ryan Best – Barbados
Ryan Hinds – Barbados
Marlon Graham – Barbados
Ramnaresh Sarwan – Guyana
Azeemul Haniff – Guyana – disqualified
Eion Katchy – Guyana – disqualified
Asif Jan – Trinidad & Tobago
Avidesh Samaroo – Trinidad & Tobago – disqualified
Wayne Phillip – (Wkt) Windwards – disqualified
Marlon Samuels – Jamaica
Ryan Cunningham – Jamaica – disqualified
Augustine Logie – Coach
