A dazzling performance by talented all rounder Rajendra Latcha spearheaded Kennard’s Memorial Cricket Club to championship honours against No 71, in the Demerara Bank/Berbice Cricket Board 40 overs 2nd division tournament, played among teams in the Central/Upper Corentyne area.
The match, played at the Bush Lot Farm, Central Corentyne, saw Latcha scoring 77. He later returned to grab 5-41 to spearhead the home team to a comfortable 79 run victory over No. 71 Cricket Club. This match is the former team’s inaugural game in the Berbice Cricket Board championship.
Early morning showers forced the umpires to reduce the match to 35 overs. Kennard’s Memorial won the toss and elected to bat. Skipper Thomas George and Latcha posted an opening stand of 59 before George was bowled by leg spinner Navin Vincent for 23.
Latcha and Mankarran Singh then added 67 for the 2nd wicket in 14 overs before Latcha went, run out for 77 in the 22nd over. The score was then 126-2.
Talented 20 year-old Somesh Mangroo then joined Singh and added 14 for the next wicket before the latter batsman attempted to hook medium pacer Nazim Mohamed and was caught. He contributed 45 (4×4, 2×6).
Mangroo and Hemraj Mankarran then brought the team fans to their feet with an entertaining stand of 120 in 11 overs. Mangroo was especially harsh on the No. 71 bowlers, hitting them to all parts of the small ground. He lost Mankarran, stumped off Mohamed for 36 (3×4, 1×6) in the 34th over, shortly before the Kennard Memorial innings ended with that team finishing on 281-4. Mangroo finished unbeaten with a top score of 81 (4×4, 6×6). His companion was Farouk Drepaul (9).
Skipper Mohamed took 2-61 bowling for No. 71 who needed to score at 8 runs per over to surpass the home team’s score. They were given a great start by openers Somdat Singh and Deodat Ramdat who put on 118 in 18 overs before Singh fell for 71 (8×4, 5×6) off the bowling of off spinner Latcha. From the comfort of 118 without loss, No. 71 slumped to 132-4 following Latcha’s dismissals of Nazim Mohamed (0), Muniram and Navin Vincent, each scoring 1 run.
Latcha’s spell proved to be decisive as No 71 never recovered and were eventually dismissed for 202 off 34.3 overs.
Ramdat played a wonderful innings before being the 7th man out for a well crafted 65 (7×4, 1×6) at 173 in the 29th over. Of the other batsmen, only Kamcharran Roopraj 15 and Bickram Ramsud 13 reached double figures.
Bowling for Kennard’s Memorial, Latcha took 5-45 off 7 overs while Somesh Mangroo took 2-40.
