Jeremy Cornelius sent out an ominous warning to the nation’s top race walkers when he out-walked a competitive field to capture the inaugural event of the 2010 race walk season, Sunday February 7 last.
The event, organized by the Cavaliers Sports and Tour Club (CSTC) and held in commemoration of Guyana’s 44th Republic Anniversary, was staged around the inner circuit of the National Park and covered a distance of 10K. . Richard Lewis came in second while veteran race walker, Maurice Fagundes closed off the podium positions, proving that he is still a force to be reckoned with. Debidyal Harold dominated the veteran’s category while the Charles’ family dominated the junior category. Ivelaw finished first moments before his brother Dan strode in. Their sister, Angela, sealed off the top spots.
All of the winners received trophies and other prizes donated by the proprietors of Ming’s Products and Services Ltd and DaSilva’s House of Optics. The walkers would be in action again this weekend, February 14 for a race in commemoration of the death of the late founder leader of the People’s National Congress and Guyana’s first executive President, Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham.
Participants would gather at the Burnham Bust, Public and Vlissengen Road, Kitty for the start of the race at 06:00hrs. They would then proceed south along Vlissengen Road and east into the Botanical gardens for the culmination of the race at the Place of the Seven Ponds.
