Government has signaled a harsher stance on the operations of co-operatives and following visits last week to Essequibo, has warned the bodies to ensure compliance and submit annual returns early.
A statement of the Ministry of Labour on Tuesday said that Minister Manzoor Nadir visited Region Six over the weekend inspecting two co-operatives plagued with problems of poor management and accountability issues.
Accompanying the Minister were Regional Chairman, Zulfikar Mustapha, and Chief Cooperative Development Officer, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, who visited operations of the Port Mourant United Cooperative Society Ltd and the Port Mourant Follow-up Co-operative Society Ltd.
The visit by the officials came after consistent claims by auditors and their inability to express a favourable opinion on the accounts. The Chief Co-operative Development Officer was forced to take over the management of the Port Mourant United Cooperative Society Ltd.
According to the Ministry, it had found that persons have been acquiring lands assigned to the coops without the proper adherence to the rules and laws governing co-operatives.
Nadir warned that his ministry will continue to call on co-ops to examine their books.
Government will also be pressing for the prosecution of managers who cannot account for the assets of co-ops.
The outreach to Region Six follows closely on the heels of a visit that the Minister made to Region Two early last week.
The Minister reminded that all co-operative societies should send their annual returns to the Chief Cooperative Development Society by March 31.
