Harper to conduct coaching session, GCB donates ‘nets’
By Sean Devers
The Buxton ‘Carl Hooper’ Cricket Club on the East Coast of Demerara continues to progress despite a few hiccups and President and founder member of the club, Esse Peters, described the recently held 10th anniversary day of activities a resounding success.
Peters, the President since the club was officially launched in 2000, told Kaieteur Sports yesterday that while getting balls and cricket gear for the youth section of the club was still a concern, the club has been moving in a positive direction over the last year and 2010 promises to be the best year for the institution.
“While getting balls and gear for our youth programmes is our biggest headache since no club dues are collected from members of our youth section, we have received lots of help from several persons and Mr Chetram Singh and the Guyana Cricket Board recently presented us with nets for our practice session. Our ground in now in a very good condition and has 2 pitches and a nice pavilion and we are looking forward to once again hosting matches in East Coast Cricket Board (ECCB) competitions,” Peters informed.
Peters also disclosed that former West Indies Vice-Captain and President of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Roger Harper also donated cricket gear to the club. Peters said the former West Indies Test team Coach has promised to conduct a coaching session at the club this week.
The Buxton Cricket Club President said that his club, which now has 2 teams participating in the ECCB’s President’s Cup competition, receives assistance from Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) President and GCB Vice-President Bissoon Singh and feels that along with Lusignan and Enterprise, his club must be among the top four on the East Coast at the senior level.
Former Guyana under-19 all-rounder and national footballer Clive Andries is the new Captain of the club’s senior team while National Sports Commission (NSC) Coach Daniel Richmond works with the youth players on a regular basis.
“We wrote a letter to the Sports Ministry requesting junior gear and we hope that they will help us to keep the youths in Buxton off the streets and away from crime by helping to provide equipment they could use at practice in the afternoons.”
Peters further explained that GCB’s Robin Singh has also promised to try and get some balls for the youth section of the club but that would be until after the present Regional 4-day cricket series since he is now a member of the Guyana team’s coaching staff.
“We have to work hard to erase the bad image people have of Buxton and we feel that sports provides a great opportunity for us to show that while every area in Guyana has good and bad people, Buxton can produce more people like Andries who are well educated and able to represent their country in sports,” Peters said.
He said several teams come to Buxton for friendly matches and as a member of the ECCB board it is encouraging the competitions committee to fix more matches for the Buxton ground since the cost to travel for ‘away’ matches is taxing the coffers of the club.
“This year we intend to focus on our junior section and as such we need as much help as we can get since we will never ask our youths to pay dues or traveling expenses since this will only drive many of them away from the club,” Peters added.
The recent 10th anniversary celebrations began with a Church Service while a minute’s silence was observed in memory of the late Clive ‘Iron Man’ Andries who was a member of the club. Buxton defeated Transport Sports Club in the final of the 20/20 match during the anniversary celebrations with Andries taking 5 wickets and making 49, Rawle Fredericks hitting 70 and Mervin Kato 60. LBI and Plaisance were the other teams involved. The trophies were donated by Bissoon Singh and the ECCB, Peters and the Buxton Bakery shop, while Fredericks put up a trophy for a feature football match in which the ‘Overseas Buxton United’ beat the ‘Buxton Veterans’ 2-nil.
The presentations were done by Mrs Frank of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and Mr Manbodhe of the ECCB’s Competition Committee.
