As GCB beefs up Guyana team’s coaching staff
By Sean Devers
Former West Indies pace bowler, Reon King and cricket analyst, Robin Singh have joined national Coach Ravendra Seeram to complete the technical team for Guyana’s next match in this year’s Regional First-Class cricket tournament against Barbados at Albion starting this Friday.
It is not clear whether this is a temporary arrangement or if King and Singh would also travel with the squad to Trinidad and Grenada for their final two games. The appointments come at a time when Guyana is languishing at the bottom of the points table with 7 points going into the fifth round. Ironically, the announcement came simultaneously with an appeal made in the newspaper for the inclusion of the two administrators to support Seeram.
The 48-year-old Seeram, a former Guyana batsman with 3 tons from 41 First-Class matches, had replaced Albert Smith mid-way through last year’s competition but so far has failed to arrest the decline of the local team. Guyana finished at the bottom of the table in that competition.
While officials of the GCB could not verify King and Singh’s inclusion for the remaining overseas matches, Kaieteur Sport was reliably informed that they will travel with the team to Trinidad and Grenada later this month.
The inclusion of the pair to the technical team along with the availability of Guyana’s most successful test batsman, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, should improve Guyana’s fortunes following a drawn result in Antigua against T&T and back-to-back defeats against defending champions Jamaica and the Combined Campus and Colleges, in Barbados.
The 34-year-old King, the newly appointed GCB Cricket Development Officer, played 19 Tests and 50 ODIs for the West Indies between 1998 and 2005 and took 293 First-Class wickets from 95 games before playing his final match at that level against Jamaica in 2007.
The former West Indies pacer also played professionally in the UK and South Africa possesses a wealth of cricket knowledge. He will to travel to Berbice tomorrow for Guyana’s next match.
Singh, who recently set up the long overdue Guyana Cricket Board website, has spent over 20 years in T&T and would be familiar with the video and computer technology. King, Seeram and the players would be guided by this technology and would be able to correct the technical mistakes that have consistently plagued the team’s advancement.
Singh spoke with this newspaper and revealed that he was very happy to have been appointed to the position. “Following the completion of the Stanford 20/20 for 20 tournament I returned home and was appalled at the standard of local cricket,” he said. He further pointed out that he had wanted to contribute to positive changes. “I believe that a person must try to make a difference so when I saw a vacancy for a Cricket Development Officer (CDO) I applied and was happy to have been appointed to the position,” he said.
Mr. Singh intimated that it has been one of the best decisions he had made. He believes that the marriage between himself and King would impact positively on the local team’s performance. “We have been working assiduously to implement changes as we see fit and will continue to do so,” Singh told Kaieteur Sport.
He explained that the technical squad has implemented strategies that cover all areas of cricket and is assured that there would be improvement at all levels. “It is extremely important that we (GCB) evolve and become modern, interactive, community oriented and fan-based. The newer generations expect more and the future hinges upon their involvement,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Guyana team, which lost to CCC last month, had its first practice session on Monday last in East Bank Berbice. Prior to this game the players received a pep talk from former Guyana and West Indies Captain, Clive Lloyd.
The Guyana 16-man squad read: Sewnarine Chattergoon (Captain), Assad Fudadin (V/Captain), Rajendra Chandrika, Chris Barnwell, Royston Crandon, Esuan Crandon, Vishaul Singh, Gajanand Singh, Derwin Christian, Veerasammy Permaul, Davendra Bishoo, Brendon Bess, Trevor Benn, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Zaheer Mohamed, Anthony Bramble.
Members of the support staff are Carl Moore (Manager), Ravindra Seeram (Coach), Reon King (Assistant Coach) and Robin Singh (Analyst)
