A 27-year-old security guard from Bartica was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital in a critical condition after a policeman, believed to have been under the influence of alcohol, crashed a Joint Services vehicle into the guard hut he was in early yesterday morning.
The man whose name was given as Cefu Pollydore was transferred from the Bartica Hospital due to the state of his injuries.
The policeman is presently under close arrest and tests are being carried out on him to determine the alcohol level in his system.
Divisional Commander David Ramnarine confirmed the incident when contacted by this newspaper yesterday.
He said that the vehicle involved is one that is assigned to ranks of the Joint Services for patrol purposes.
According to Assistant Commissioner Ramnarine, the policeman, a constable, drove the vehicle in such a reckless manner, resulting in it crashing into the guard hut on First Street, Bartica, in which Pollydore was keeping guard. Ramnarine told this newspaper that from the report he received, it is suspected that the constable was under the influence of alcohol.
“It would appear to me that there was some sort of carelessness which resulted in the policeman being in possession of the keys for the vehicle,” Ramnarine told Kaieteur News.
This newspaper was informed about the incident by a resident of Bartica who expressed concern over the way the vehicles assigned to the security forces in the area are being driven.
