Ten-team two-round format to be intense
By Franklin Wilson
If the inaugural Guyana Football Federation (GFF) National Super League sponsored by FIFA through the Win in CONCACAF with CONCACAF Initiative was demanding, the ten participating clubs will have to condition their minds to the reality that this time around, it will be two rounds of what is expected to be intense and grueling battles.
Defending champions Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United who played unbeaten last year will start as favourites to retain their title but Kaieteur Sport understands that the other clubs have taken the opportunity to replenish and strengthen their stock of players as they seek to end on the podium this time around.
The option of four (4) foreign players was also open to all the clubs but it is not quite clear if any club snapped up that opportunity.
GFF Boss Colin Klass in an invited comment stated that he is looking forward to an exciting league and is eager to see the improvement of the club’s management given the investment the Federation made by hosting training programmes for administrators. “I’m also anticipating and looking forward to seeing major improvement in the on field standard of the game and a more professional attitude from the players.”
Klass also noted that he is hoping that out of this league Guyana can move to the next realm, that of having its own professional league.
Games will again be played at venues around the country and Klass said this is in an effort to build the spectator base in these communities as the Federation aims to see the standard of the sport move to the next level.
The same teams who competed in the inaugural League which was a pilot project will again be battling. Alpha United, Sunburst Camptown and the Guyana Defence Force will be leading the Georgetown Football Association’s charge.
Buxton United and Victoria Kings are the two East Demerara Football Association teams, Bakewell Topp XX and Milerock FC (Upper Demerara F.A), Seawall FC (West Demerara FA), Liquid Gold (Bartica FA) and Rosignol United representing the Berbice Football Association.
And while complimenting those sponsors who supported last year’s inaugural League, Klass called on Corporate Guyana to support like they never did before noting that their contributions adds up to success, ultimately for Guyana.
The GFF National Super League as well as the Cellink Premier League contributed to Guyana’s first overseas tournament win at the senior level last year when the Golden Jaguars primarily made up of local based players won the first ever Suriname Independence Cup which featured the hosts, Guyana, French Guiana and the Netherlands Antilles. Guyana emerged as the best with respective 1-0 wins over their opponents.
