A few weeks ago the Guyana Fire Service received new fire tenders equipped with all the amenities to effectively fight fires. But someone had the bright idea that those amenities would be best suited for purposes other than fire fighting, maybe mining.
They stole 11 lengths of brand new delivery hoses.
The 75-foot hoses, valued at $120,000 each, were removed from the fire service bond.
The discovery was made on Monday morning when officials turned up at the bond and found a huge hole in the concrete wall.
Senior officials at the Central Fire Station in Georgetown are tightlipped about the theft, but according to a source there, this is not the first time that hoses and the relevant components have been stolen.
The source said that the heist might be the work of former firemen and their colleagues presently in the system.
A number of trained firefighters are presently using their skills in the mining industry and it is believed that they are using their connections at their former place of employment to acquire much needed equipment for their mining operations at a cost far below current market prices.
