– Magistrate calls for investigation
A Berbice man who was found in possession of a bogus licence has implicated a policeman whom he said sold it to him for $30,000.
Berbice Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo has since ordered an investigation to determine how Ivelaw Henry, a mechanic, of 12 Pope Street , New Amsterdam, got possession of the bogus driver’s licence.
It was discovered that Henry had unlawfully obtained the document.
This came about after Henry was charged with three counts of breaching the traffic regulations, after the car he was driving was involved in an accident.
The court was told that Sunday last at around 09:30hrs the accused, who is not a licenced driver, drove motor car HB5416 in a dangerous manner on Princess Elizabeth Road, while being under the influence of alcohol, and collided with motor car PGG 9015.
The accused was subsequently arrested and when tested was found to have consumed 165 Microbes above the prescribed limit. It was also found that he was not in possession of a valid driver’s licence and was in breach of insurance.
In court the accused pleaded guilty to all of the charges.
In relation to the breach of insurance charge he was fined $25,000 or an alternative of 12 weeks in jail, on the unlicenced driver charge he was fined $20,000 or a further 12 weeks in prison, on the drunk driving charge he was fined $7,500 – a total of $52,500 which is to be paid immediately. The Magistrate also ordered that the accused be banned for 9 months.
When asked by the Magistrate how he got the licence, Henry told the court that he bought it for $30,000 from a policeman.
Pressed further by the magistrate to name the policeman who sold him the licence, Henry said he could not remember the man’s name, but it was a Constable and he bought it in Georgetown.
The Magistrate then told the prosecutor that she needs an investigation to be done as quickly as possible into how Henry came in possession of the licence and who the seller is. She also instructed the prosecutor to take further statements from the accused.
