Road construction at Goedverwagting, East Coast Demerara, came to an abrupt halt around 15:25 hrs yesterday, after a 52-year-old driver was crushed to death by the roller he was operating.
Sooknanan Ramdial, of Bath Settlement, Berbice, was killed when the vehicle toppled over and pinned him on Claybrick Road.
He remained under the vehicle for some 45 minutes and was already dead by the time his colleagues pulled him free.
Ramdial was working with Innovative Constructive Company when the mishap occurred. He had been employed with the firm for about five years.
Eyewitnesses said that Ramdial had just turned into Claybrick Road, which is under construction, when he lost control of the roller.
The vehicle veered off the roadway and overturned in a canal, pinning Ramdial before he could jump free.
It took the driver’s colleagues several minutes to hitch a truck to the overturned roller and hoist it off the motionless Ramdial.
The body remained on the roadway for about an hour before a hearse arrived to remove it.
