NSC favour Hopkinson, grassroots back Fraser
By Edison Jefford
Harold Hopkinson and Arron Fraser have emerged as two frontrunners for the Presidency of the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) ahead of their looming 2010 AGM and Elections that will be held some time this month.
A source close to the association told Kaieteur Sport that GTTA General Secretary and its Assistant Secretary/Treasurer, Godfrey Munroe and Linden Johnson respectively, were in conversation yesterday on the subject of the Elections.
However, a date has not been set for the imminent event, but this newspaper understands that the two frontrunners for the Presidency are Hopkinson and Fraser. Current President, Attorney, Anil Nandlall has declined being re-elected.
Director of Sport, Neil Kumar, under the aegis of the National Sport Commission (NSC) had called out Hopkinson for the top post at the launch of the GTTA Schools’ tournament last week. The comment did not surprise Hopkinson.
Kumar had said he would give his support to Hopkinson in an unexpected move that will surely raise expectations when nominations are placed. Hopkinson has not yet confirmed running for the Presidency but he will definitely be interested.
He is a current GTTA Assistant Secretary with other administrative experiences in motor racing and handgun shooting. Hopkinson is the Chief Executive Officer of a security firm and is expected to submit that corporate image to the association.
His challenge will come from Fraser, who has confirmed his interest in the Presidency. A former distance athlete and administrator at Atoms Athletics Club and Malteenoes Sports Club, Fraser is eying the association’s top position.
Fraser’s support is largely grassroots with an outstanding amount of input to help with the resuscitation of table tennis at Malteenoes and the departure of national teams. His ability to mobilise and network is an unmatched characteristic.
The Accounts and Projects Manager at Warsila has been involved in sport for most of his life and plans to take that enthusiasm to the top of the GTTA.
The battle is expected to be an interesting one as events unfold in the coming days.
