Dear Editor,
It is good that Guyanese in some letters to the media still have the courage and patriotism to draw attention to some inconceivable situations that continue to draw dark clouds over our boast of a “return to democracy”.
Among writers such as Freddie Kissoon, who can no way be considered a fawning admirer of President Forbes Burnham, has drawn many parallels to show that we have with us a dictatorship that have made the worst of Burnham’s alleged excesses of Burnham minor
One example is the financial outlay of hundreds of millions of dollars spent on the President’s frequent trips abroad. The impression one gets, in spite of the well oiled propaganda machine, is he drops into Guyana every now and then, ignoring, as we saw, during the killing spree and now the mining sector crisis in Guyana which requires a steady hand from the Commander–in-Chief.
The trouble is, we see legion examples where the President fails to delegate real authority and decision making to the majority of his ministers and a keen observer can sight many examples almost on a daily basis.
In fact, more than one of his ministers have complained quietly, but are afraid to speak out. Clearly with a Cabinet that is too large, one will expect the President to give all his ministers a chance to meet and to represent the country.
For example, this latest youth exercise in Suriname; really he was only one of two heads and with the Minister of Culture, Youth & Sports, he alone should have been sufficient to represent Guyana,
But for the young, let me give one example of the difference between this alleged dictatorship.
I remember three examples where Burnham dedicated others to represent him where he himself could have gone.
1. The funeral of the late Emperor Hirohito of Japan
2. Independence celebration of Antigua and Barbuda
3. Independence celebration at the Republic of Namibia
The others are too numerous to mention.
When will this nonsense stop?
I suppose his next stop will be to Haiti and Lindo Creek.
