Despite the many challenges in the local flour industry, over the past 16 years there has never been a shortage.
This is according to General Manager of National Milling Company, Bert Sukhai. Sukhai, in a recent interview, stated that the many successes over the years are as a result of strategic planning.
He said that his company has had its share of challenges but it still manages to upkeep the standards.
One of the company’s major concerns is the export of flour in the Caribbean. Sukhai explained that given the fact that most of the countries in the Caribbean have their own mills, the possibility is not feasible to export flour to this part of the region.
As such, Sukhai said his company is looking at the possibility of exporting flour to neighbouring Brazil.
Sukhai said that while the option is being explored, the milling company needs the intervention of the Foreign Affairs Ministry and the relevant authorities in Brazil.
Sukhai pointed out that while transporting flour from Georgetown to Lethem is a bit costly, Lethem and Boa Vista are both duty free zones.
Sukhai said that it would be more economical for his company if flour is added to the list of duty free items for export.
“The opportunity is there but we need help; there have been talks about the necessary guidelines being put in place to facilitate proper export but nothing official has been done to this end,” Sukhai said.
