Dear Editor,
Today the price of sugar on the world market is over US$0.28 per pound.
In the past the price of sugar went to some lows such as US$0.11 per pound.
The reasons for these huge swings are many, but a few are – real and artificial supply and demand, dumping of inventories by developed nations, whims and fancies of future market investors etc.
There are many different ways of countering – diversification, energy canes etc, but the easiest to my mind while retaining all of the current configurations are:
1. Ethanol: – if we can find ourselves in a position to fuel all our vehicles with ethanol instead of gas when the price difference between that of sugar and gasoline on the world market makes it feasible.
2. Storage: – if we can store sugar in the low price times and sell in the high price market. When storage life comes to an end we can then convert to ethanol.
One of GuySuCo’s former directors presented a paper in which he claimed that we can meet all of our current gasoline needs with GuySuCo-produced ethanol. This paper should be made public and debated. The price of crude is on the rise, gasoline will undoubtedly follow. Cars that have fuel injection (over 80% on our roads) can be easily converted to ethanol (http://e85vehicles.com/converting-to-e85.html).
The talk of peak oil, the fact that cane ethanol has high energy return with respect to energy invested versus corn ethanol and the present medical concerns with alternative sweeteners should make us feel pretty comfortable. Storage is done all over the world, the technology exists.
Other things that are significant to the success of any profit making organisation, be they family businesses or corporate entities, are, continuing dedication to increasing efficiencies, and direction that is ‘high IQ-low ego’ enabled.
