The national GT&T sponsored 10/10 cricket competition organized by the Guyana Softball Cricket League (GSCL) in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports was yesterday officially launched at the Carifesta Sports Complex ground in the city.
Speaking at the opening ceremony yesterday, GT&T’s CEO, Major General Retired Joe Singh told the gathering which included Director of Sports Neil Kumar and GSCL’s President Halim Khan, that the telephone company was pleased to be associated with the competition and that he wants to see the restoration of a strong sports culture in Guyana.
“There was a time in the 1980s when you would see Case Cup cricket, Northcote matches and white cup games being played on several grounds in Georgetown and the next day you will see the back pages of the Chronicle carrying all the stories and scoreboards of the senior competition. I want to see that type of sport culture again,” Singh said.
The final of the competition, which has attracted 584 teams, is set for the historic Bourda ground on March 21 and it was disclosed that 44 grounds hosted matches on the opening day yesterday.
Kumar, also a Member of Parliament said that sport is important to any nation and revealed that Government wants to pay more attention to the development of Community Sports in Guyana.
“We all have to play our part in making sports in Guyana strong. Only yesterday (Friday) I was reading a newspaper article about the decline of Guyana’s cricket and I believe that this competition could act as a stimulus for the growth of sports in this country,” Kumar opined.
The Director of Sport informed that not only ‘softball people’ were involved but several others from various sports and said that he understood that the national swimming Coach was setting up a team to play in the biggest competition for softball cricket ever held in this country.
The competition, which also has the biggest prize money ever in Guyana’s softball cricket history, bowled off yesterday with the opening match between Street Life and Sophia at the Carifesta ground.
Kumar and other officials from the Ministry, GT&T and the GSCL met the players from the two teams before the start of the match while Kumar bowled the symbolic first ball to Joe Singh.
GT&T senior official Terry Holder, who is also the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) told this newspaper that the competition could provide many positive ‘spin-offs’ including getting more families together in a social and recreational environment in the communities since softball cricket usually attract a large following especially in the rural areas.
