The Christmas holidays are now over and race walkers right across the country have had a long period away from competition. They are now gearing up for a month of stiff action as Guyana celebrates its 44th independence anniversary starting tomorrow, February 7 when the Cavalier’s Sports and Tour Club(CSTC) kicks off its fiscal year with a 10K walk around the National Park, Thomas lands.
Rudolph Mitchell, undoubtedly the best in the sport locally, would look to resume where he had left off, piling on the credits on the remarkable unbeaten century mark notched up late last year. The astute race walker has defeated all and sundry and obviously would be nurturing hopes of retaining the prestigious accolade of best race walker on the local scene. He would have to be wary of Jonathon Fagundes and Jeremy Cornelius, two of his fiercest rivals to date.
Activities continue the following Sunday, February 14 with the Forbes Burnham anniversary Race Walk starting at the Burnham Bust, Vlissengen and Public Roads Kitty. The walkers would then proceed south to the Botanical Gardens for the finish at the Place of the Seven Ponds.
One week afterwards, on February 21, race walkers would convene at the Guyoil Gas Station, Sheriff and David Streets, Campbellville for another walk that commences at that point and culminates at the 1763 Monument, Vlissengen Road and Brickdam. The race walkers would then travel to Linden for the final event, another 10K walk starting at Amelia’s Ward junction and culminating at the Linden Town Hall, Republic Drive.
The walkers would compete in several categories including male, female, veterans and differently able. Race time for all events is 06:30hrs.
