Action in the 2010 Bounty Farm sponsored Handicap squash tournament continued to heat up on Thursday evening, at the Georgetown Club courts.
First up, it was the Allan Downes versus David Fernandes clash in the Open category quarterfinal that had the crowd on the edge of their seats.
Starting at +6, Downes quickly made up his handicap and got to game point at 14-13 in the first set, before Fernandes (+12) then levelled the score at 14-14 and Downes surprisingly called set one.
It was a decision he would come to regret as Fernandes rode his luck to end the game 15/14.
The match seemed all over when Fernandes got to match point at 14-7 in the second, but Downes scrapped and scraped and clawed his way back, fighting off seven match points to get to 14-14.
This time it was Fernandes, who surprisingly called set three, but after staving off elimination for so many times Downes relaxed and gifted Fernandes two more match points at 16-15.
Once again Downes denied Fernandes and managed to take the second 17/16. The third started with Downes going on a three point run, before Fernandes won two of the next four rallies to get to match point again at 14-11. It would be his last point of the match as Downes buckled down and survived several scares to make it into the semi-final, winning the stanza 17/14.
Regan Pollard, Alexander Arjoon and Patrick Fraser also featured among the other categories.
Last evening featured the semi-finals of both categories with several intriguing matches in both main and consolation draws. Action is set to culminate today.
