The Mayor and Councillors of the City of Georgetown have expressed gross dissatisfaction with the way in which some persons continue to wantonly dispose of refuse into canals, drains and on parapets, in and around the city.
And those persons caught littering will be arrested and placed before the courts.
According to Public Relations Officer (ag) Mayor and City Council, Debra Lewis, certain sections of city have been specially targeted.
These areas include the Bus Park outside of Stabroek Market, King Street, Lacytown between Regent and Charlotte Streets, and Wellington Street between Charlotte Street and South Road.
She added that littering compromises the integrity of the environment and puts the health of the citizens at risk; since it facilitates the breeding of rodents and those things that carry vector-borne diseases.
Officers of the Solid Waste Management Department work tirelessly to ensure that the city is free from public dumps.
Moreover, between two and three tonnes of refuse are removed daily from the Stabroek Market Bus Park. Before 24 hours could elapse the area is littered again. This behavioural pattern is totally unacceptable, she said. Therefore, the various departments of the municipality have collaborated their resources to bring an end to this undesirable situation.
The Council is calling on all persons who operate within the vicinity of the Municipal Market to act responsibly and dispose of garbage in bins.
Citizens are reminded that the fine for littering is $10,000, the press release stated.
