Monday is Budget Day and this year, Government says that it will be spending more on infrastructural development and demanding that its institutions are giving the best of services following huge investments overtime in the different sectors.
Giving a broad outline of what Guyanese can expect, Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Roger Luncheon, said that the budget will focus on reducing joblessness.
Continuing from last year’s, the country’s budget will continue to pay attention to the macro-economy while promoting growth. There will also be heightened attention to public accountability.
Speaking at a press conference at the Office of the President yesterday, the Head of the Presidential Secretariat, noted that the 2009 budget was crafted to alleviate the problem faced, the global crisis which continued to make its effects felt last year.
The 2010 budget will further consolidate the successful implementation of last year’s and will pursue development goals in both the regional and international scenes.
Meanwhile, responding to questions why despite yet another budget, there are no reports on the completed World Cup, Carifesta activities and the 2005 floods, the government official explained that the budget is basically straightforward and requires submissions from various departments. On the other hand, the events listed would be more time consuming and include the submissions of reports, verifications and then it would have to be audited before being compiled in a comprehensive report before it can be presented.
With millions of dollars expended during Carifesta, World Cup and the 2005 floods, there has been a clamouring to have reports to analyze how the money was spent.
