The University of Guyana returned from Barbados with a bronze medal after competing in the annual Inter-Collegiate 20/20 cricket tournament from January 4-10 last.
Sports Organizer of the University of Guyana, Sievewright Benjamin informed this newspaper that his boys had performed creditably in the tournament.
Benjamin said that the UG squad arrived in Bridgetown and engaged in four matches of a four team tournament against a Barbados Select Youth X1. the other teams competing in the competition are Barbados Community College, UWI Cave Hill, and Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic.
The sports organizer said that the local scholars registered a win against that team and then struggled badly against the Community College and the UWI Cave Hill. He further explained that the two losses placed the UG team in a must win position in their final game against the Polytechnic College if they were to earn a podium spot.
Benjamin said that in a game characterized by resolve and conviction, the local UG lads went on to register a win and the bronze medal that went with it.
He said his boys had sent in Polytechnic College and then restricted them to a paltry 113. They then knocked off the required total with five wickets to spare, earning the bronze medal.
According to Benjamin, despite their third place finish, the talent of the UG cricket team was obvious. He lauded the team spirit and commitment demonstrated by the team saying that with a little more training it would gel into a forceful unit.
He also lauded the individual contributions of several members of the team singling out Captain Richard Chaturia, Melroy Stephenson and Rudolph Mc Donald.
He said that these three demonstrated astute batting throughout the tournament. In the bowling department Rovin Crawford, Dhannieram Seepersaud , and Parmeshwar Persaud came in for special praise.
Benjamin said that notwithstanding the challenges encountered by his entity, he is optimistic that the students are benefiting immensely from the programmes put in place for their development.
The sports organizer debunked rumors that the programme was not as penetrative as it ought to be. He said that his entity had worked assiduously to ensure that sport is kept vibrant on the campus. “The year has only now started but our programmes are quite on stream,” said Benjamin.
Last October the students had competed in the inter-faculty athletic championships and then engaged in the inter-faculty football competition.
Benjamin said that the students are now preparing for end of term exams forcing a halt to the sports programme. He said that activities are set to resume with a 20/20 cricket competition scheduled for March 8-29 next.
This tournament would precede the inter-faculty table tennis championships scheduled for the first two weeks in April. Subsequently, in June, the students would compete for honours in the Inter-Facuty Basketball tournament
Benjamin admitted that his organization was constrained by a shoe string budget that could hardly address the yearly programme.
He intimated that the 6 million dollars identified for sports development is almost liquidated after the Barbados trip. He said that they plan to approach the corporate entities to offset the expenses needed to address other activities planned for the year.
The Sports organizer said that administrators have already paid for trophies and medals for most of the year’s activities.
He said that they plan to seek assistance some items that include cash to offset the payment of officials for the various matches, water and other miscellaneous items.
