A 23-year-old security guard attached to the MMC security firm was yesterday charged with manslaughter after he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Romeo Jones, 23, of Durban and Breda Streets, was not required to plead to the indictable charge of manslaughter which stated that he unlawfully killed Kwesi D’Andrade on January 31 last.
Jones was represented by attorney at law Trenton Lake, who in an application for bail, asked that this be granted in a reasonable sum.
When asked by the magistrate if he had anything to say, Jones stated that the incident was not intentional.
He explained that there was a round in the breech of his gun when he responded to an alarm. Jones said that he did not know what the situation was. He noted that after he arrived on the scene, via vehicle, he saw D’Andrade and subsequently arrested him. The suspect was then placed into the vehicle.
According to Jones, D’Andrade was not handcuffed and he attacked him. He said that he was choked and a struggle ensued and all he heard was the gun go off.
Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford did not oppose bail. He told the court that on the day in question, Kwesi D’Andrade was arrested for stealing a battery, and while in custody he attacked Jones and was shot as a result.
Bail was denied.
D’Andrade was shot on Sunday at Eping Avenue, Bel Air Park. It is alleged that he attempted to escape from a security guard who had apprehended him. According to the police, two security guards attached to Roraima Airways at Eping Avenue saw two men removing the batteries from a canter truck that was parked on the roadway outside of Roraima Airways.
One was arrested while the other escaped on a bicycle. Another vehicle with three more ranks arrived at the scene and D’Andrade was handed over to them.
The suspect was placed in the back of the vehicle along with one of the security personnel who was armed with a shotgun while the other two were in the cab.
It is alleged that the suspect attacked the security guard with him at the back of the vehicle in an attempt to escape and was shot in the process.
He was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
