Feb 05, 2010 Letters
Dear Editor,
I have followed with keen interest the many letters to the press concerning the President’s numerous overseas visits. The matter did not miss the AFC press conference when Presidential Candidate Mr. Raphael Trotman puts a figure to the overseas travels.
Whichever side we are on the political spectrum, it seems unfair to me that so much displeasure is vented in the press. We need to understand that the President is the President. He was elected by the majority of our citizens in a free and fair election. As President he is entitled to many of the perks the position offers.
Let us not forget that in 2011 he will no longer be President. My own feeling is that the President is positioning himself for a world class job after his Presidency. We must also understand that many countries do not know of Guyana or our leaders. In order for President Jagdeo to be known, he must of necessity meet the leaders of these countries on their own turf. He will need their help.
Let us not be too narrow-minded. The President will be a very young man when he leaves the Presidency. I don’t think that anyone expect him to go into retirement at that age. If he can secure a world class job after his Presidency he may be able to help Guyana in a very tangible way.
The cost that is incurred now for his travels will bear great dividend in the future. Guyana will reap numerous benefits in the process. Look at the bigger picture my friends.
Let us assume that Mr. Trotman becomes our next President. When he would have completed his two terms as President, he also will still be a young man. I would suggest that he should take the opportunity during his Presidency to meet other world leaders who he will need for onward movement.
Let us give the President the support and the space he needs as he make his entry into his post Presidency.
Charles Sugrim
