Residents of Moco-Moco, Region Nine, are living in fear of a large cat believed to be a jaguar which is wreaking havoc with their livestock.
The residents believe that the cat will soon attack humans since it is now getting bolder and emerging from the thick jungle that surrounds the area and attacking closer to civilization.
The latest attack occurred early Sunday morning when it devoured several sheep and killed a few lambs, belonging to 75-year-old Sievewright Grimmond and his wife Hilda.
On Sunday morning, the elderly farmer heard rumblings emanating from his sheep pen, but assumed that the animals were unnecessarily restless.
He waited until day clean and upon checking, he found that several of his sheep were killed.
Grimmond also discovered the footprints of a large cat which convinced him that his animals were attacked by a jaguar.
This is the first time that Grimmond, who has been residing at Moco-Moco since 1969, has had such an experience.
His home is surrounded by dense forest, which he believes is the perfect hideout for the dangerous feline.
But although the attack has caused some alarm in Moco-Moco and surrounding areas, residents are not too surprised.
They claimed to have seen a large jaguar with two cubs roaming the jungle and reported it to both police and army personnel, but nothing was done to either capture or kill the animal.
They believe that it may not be too long before humans are attacked.
They are calling on members of the Guyana Defence Force stationed at Lethem to the lead in the hunt to capture the animal and eliminate further threats to the lives of cattle and humans.
