Five persons were yesterday rushed to the Leonora Cottage Hospital following an accident on the Uitvlugt Public Road, West Coast Demerara.
Reports are that a police pick up PKK 741 crashed into the back of a minibus PJJ 5718 just as the minibus stopped to put off a passenger.
The driver of the minibus Neil Purai told this newspaper that the accident occurred just after 10:30 hours when he stopped at Church Bridge in Uitvlugt.
According to Purai, his vehicle was stationary and a passenger was exiting the vehicle when he felt a heavy impact at the rear of his vehicle. The man said when he turned around the back windscreen was completely shattered and the passengers were all hysterical. He added that his conductor Abdool Azeez was among the five who were rushed to the hospital. He could not say the extent of the injuries the passengers received but noted that one woman looked seriously injured as she was unconscious.
Persons who witnessed the accident told this newspaper that the police vehicle was speeding.
Meanwhile a police rank who was on the vehicle told this newspaper that they were travelling slowly when the minibus just made a sudden stop in their path causing the collision.
Despite the police claims of the driver of the minibus being in the wrong, the driver was not detained to assist with investigations.
