Dear Editor,
The people and farmers of Linden welcome visits by the Agriculture Minister, Mr. Robert Persaud and staffers of the Ministry of Agriculture over the weekend to listen to concerns and to respond to issues affecting farmers and agriculture expansion within Region 10.
Region 10 with a very strategic location is poised to take advantage of the many opportunities available within the agriculture sector with the necessary support and interventions from the Ministry and its agencies.
Already several commitments were made to support farmers’ activities to boost production to realise food security in Linden, rather than purchasing basic food items from other regions.
As a dedicated farmer for the past 15 years, I was pleased to hear Minister Persaud announce the new complement of agriculture staff to the region which included an Extension Coordinator and an Engineer to supplement the current agriculture staff based in the Region. This will surely assist farmers and the people of Region 10.
In fact, over the past three years we have witnessed a significant increase in support from the Ministry of Agriculture resulting in more acreages coming under cultivation. The many investments and interventions in agriculture will prove very beneficial in time to come which will secure Guyana food demands, while surplus produce will be export.
We the farmers of Linden are even more encouraged to continue farming and expand our cultivation with the initiatives and other support outlined by the Minister of Agriculture who recommitted himself and staffers to support farmers. The many changes highlighted by Minister Persaud will certainly transform agriculture within Region Ten and Guyana; taking our rightful place a as a major producer and supplier of food to the Caribbean and other overseas countries.
Terence William
