New Line Cavaliers (NLC) continued their unbeaten streak in the Demerara zone of the National 3-day first division cricket competition by hammering Police by 8 wickets in their latest match Saturday at the Canal Number 2 Sports Club ground.
Set 20 to win, the West Bank Demerara side, which have so far taken ‘full points’ from DCC, Nandy Park, Lusignan and now Police, reached 20-2 to book a place in the Demerara semis in their debut season of first division 3-day cricket.
NLC, without key players Skipper Andre Percival, Gajanand Singh and Mahendra Nagamootoo, won the toss and asked Police to bat on a slow track.
The Cops were bowled out for 119 in 39.1 overs with Rawl Browne hitting 6 fours in a top score of 27. Teenagers Shameer Fazal (19) and Pernell London (17) were the only batsmen to reach 15 as stand-in Captain and former Berbice player Balram Samaroo had 4-27 and Budhan Baksh 3-27.
In reply NLC resumed on their over week score of 144-8 with Chabiraj Ramcharran (23) Cohen Ismond (29) and Budhan Baksh (33) batting well.
Paul Wintz, another former Berbice player was unbeaten on 33 at the start of the 2nd day yesterday. NLC were 78-7 at one stage before Wintz and Budhan Baksh put on 66 for the 8 wicket in 19 overs to give NLC a 25-run lead.
Bowling for Police on the opening day, leg-spinner Vishaul Jaigobin picked up 4-38 and got support from Randolph Knights who took 3-37.
NLC were bowled out for 163 on the 2nd day with Wintz making 41 as Jaigobin picked up another wicket to end with 5-49 from 19 overs. Knights took the other wicket to fall on the 2nd day to end with 4 wickets.
Police, 44 runs behind, were bowled out for 63 in 28.1 overs after they were wobbling on the ropes on 27-7 with Jermaine Jones (14) and Orin Heyliger (12) being the only batsmen to reach double figures. Bowling for NLC, Chien Gittens had 5-25, Samaroo 2-17 and Avinash Sookdeo 2-17.
NLC raced to 20-2 in just 1.3 overs as the dangerous Andrew Lyght making 18 not out from 6 balls. The pugnacious right-hander clobbered 3 sixes in the first over bowled by Jaigobin before Jason Heyliger took 2 wickets in his first over.
John Champagne smashed a huge six to seal victory for leaders NLC who advanced to 51 points from 5 matches. Bowling for the lawmen, Heyliger had 2-6 in a losing cause for the Police. (SD)
