Former National Junior Chess Champion, Taffin Khan turned in a classical display of chess to upstage a competitive field that included Senior National Champion, Wendell Meusa and President of the Federation, Errol Tiwari when the curtains came down on the Trophy Stall Chess Tournament at the Keishar’s Sports Club, Hadfield Street, Georgetown, yesterday afternoon.
Khan finished the tournament on 6 points, half of a point more than Meusa who occupied the second place. President of the Chess Federation, Errol Tiwari amassed 5 points to seal off the podium spots.
Raan Motilall won 6 games to walk off with the honours in the junior category of the championships while Saeed Ali and Khalid Gajraj both amassed 5 1/2 points apiece. Ali was eventually awarded second place after the Median Buchlloz method was employed.
For his efforts Khan received a trophy and $10,000, donated by proprietor of Trophy Stall of Bourda Market and sponsor of the tournament, Ramesh Sunesh. Motilall also received a cheque for $10,000 and a trophy for winning the junior category of the tournament. He received another trophy after he was adjudged the most improved player of the tournament.
In brief comments after the tournament had concluded Khan pointed out that he has been practicing ardently in an effort to improve on his techniques. He said that he was able to employ shrewd analytical skills to prevail over the national champion. The former youth champion lauded Muesa saying that he was a tough opponent. Khan also said that he was required to employ all of his experience to pull off the win. The young chess player’s only blemish to an otherwise impeccable tournament was a loss to Mr. Tiwari in the final set yesterday morning.
Meanwhile, Tournament Director, Irshad Mohammed disclosed that the standard of the tournament was exceptionally high. He commended the junior players for their application saying that this category has seen the largest turnout in recent times.
Sponsor of the tournament, Ramesh Sunesh, who was on hand to present the prizes to the various winners, said that he was happy to render such support. He further committed to the yearly sponsorship of the tournament even as he promised to support other initiatives planned by the Federation.
