– Guyanese Griffith among them
Coach of the Pakistan cricket team and former Test cricketer Ejaz Ahmed has picked three players from the current West Indies Under-19 team in New Zealand, to move on to the senior West Indies team in the not too distant future.
Ahmed, who was a successful middle order batsman for Pakistan, has had a good look at the West Indies players, as his team was grouped with the West Indies in Group D of the preliminary round. They also played West Indies in the semi-finals of the tournament.
Ahmed said, “I think that the West Indies have a very good youth team. The boys are well drilled and seem to be very hungry for success. This is a good sign for any cricket team. The boys possess good talent and there is a lot there for the coaches to work with.
“I have had a good look at their players and I can tell right off that (Kraigg) Brathwaite, (Trevon Griffith) Griff and (Jason) Holder all have a bright future in the game. The cricket authorities back in the Caribbean must take a good look at these players and work to develop them even more. I think you have some good Test players in the making there.”
Griffith caught the attention of Ahmed after striking an aggressive 84 against Pakistan in the opening match of the World Cup. He made his half century off just 20 balls and Ahmed thinks this is by no chance. “Young Griff seems to have a lot of time to play the ball and this is a very good trait. He can really make it big for the West Indies.”
Ahmed said that one flaw he found with the West Indies cricketers was their fielding. “They have to improve their fielding. In this department I think that they have much work to do but they are young and they would improve with time.” (T&T Guardian)
