Doctors have amputated the left leg of Rockliffe Rodrigues, the 25-year-old Annai resident who was shot by police on Wednesday.
Relatives told Kaieteur News yesterday that Rodrigues had his badly injured limb amputated at a Boa Vista, Brazil Hospital, to which he was transferred for treatment.
A sister of the injured man refuted police reports that Rodrigues was shot while trying to escape from a policeman who was arresting him in connection with a break and enter investigation at a shop on January 27.
According to the sister, her brother was at home with family members and friends at around 03:30 hrs on Wednesday when he heard someone walking in the yard.
She said that her brother ventured outside to investigate and was shot in the left leg by a police rank.
The woman alleged that Rodrigues was also kicked by the police ranks. She added that the policemen informed her brother that he was wanted for questioning for break and entry and larceny, but gave no information as to where the incident had occurred. Kaieteur News was told that Rodrigues was admitted to the Lethem Hospital, but was then transferred to a Boa Vista Hospital for specialist treatment.
However, the doctors were forced to amputate his leg. A police release also stated that the court had issued an arrest warrant for Rodrigues in May 2009, in connection with his alleged assault of a policeman.
But another sister said that it was the police rank who had assaulted her brother. The sisters explained that Rodrigues lost the use of his left hand after he was chopped on the limb in 2008.
