The Interim Management Committee (IMC) appointed by the General Council of the Georgetown Football Association to chart the way forward for the game in the city has set out to achieve its mandate of regularizing the sport within the stipulated time frame of 3 months.
The governing body for the sport, Guyana Football Federation (GFF) in an effort to assist the GFA has also named a few persons to the IMC to guide the process.
IMC Chairman Gordon Gilhuys disclosed that they are operating out of the GFF office situated at Dadanawa Street, Section ‘K’ Campbellville. The Attorney-at-law also said he met with former GFA boss Troy Mendonca as they seek to have a smooth transition.
“The meeting with Mr. Mendonca was very cordial and he has undertaken to work along with us to get the game back on the road in the city and to strengthen the sport administratively.”
The transfer window for the movement of players from one club to another will close tomorrow (Sunday January 31) and clubs have been given until the second week of February to register for the year with the GFA.
It was also disclosed that the DeSinco Trading sponsored Under-19 inter-club tournament which started last year and was not completed, will re-commence next Saturday (February 6, 2010). Gilhuys noted that the IMC will attempt to garner as much information as is possible within the stipulated time given by the GFF before they call the AGM for the GFA. “We will try our utmost to get as much work done within this 3 month time frame before we call elections. But I suspect that for us to really get all the clubs in full order and properly constituted, that will take more time. We anticipate some challenges so we will have to give them more time to get their houses in proper order.”
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport recently, GFF General Secretary Noel Adonis said the action to appoint an IMC became necessary following the failure of the GFA to hold elections within the stipulated time as stated in the GFA constitution. The GFA elections were due since last June. Prior to this unfortunate turn of events, the Troy Mendonca led GFA in the past two years took the sport to another level with a multiplicity of tournaments from the pee wee up to the senior levels.
Unlike many others associations who have and still are being plagued with the lack of sponsorship, Mendonca and Secretary Marlan Cole were able to get sponsorship for all levels of competitions including the soon to be completed DeSinco Trading Under-19 tournament.
