– suicide suspected
Suicide is suspected in the death of a 21-year-old man, whose body was found on the Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara foreshore at around 07:00 hrs yesterday
The victim, clad only in his underwear, was identified as Sivram Persaud, of Lot 87 East Meten-Meer-Zorg.
He is believed to have plunged into the ocean on Wednesday, since fishermen had seen a man struggling in the water that day. However, they were unable to rescue the stranger.
One of the men told Kaieteur News that he was fishing near the seawall at around 13:00 hrs on Wednesday, when he spotted a man “fighting up” in the ocean. He also observed clothing, boots and a hat on the foreshore.
“I see this person overboard fighting up but when we go (to rescue him) he done duck.”
Police were notified but they failed to find the body, until it drifted about a mile from where Persaud had reportedly plunged.
An aunt of the victim told Kaieteur News that Persaud had suffered from mental illness and had recently lived in a shelter for the homeless. Persaud had also reportedly told a few friends on Wednesday that he was fed up with life.
