TUNING UP!!! Some of the table tennis players expected to compete in the GTTA Schools’ competition from today go through their paces yesterday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The Business School sponsored Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) Teams’ Table Tennis tournament gets on the way today at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall after a formal opening ceremony with a game in each category.
The GTTA met yesterday with representatives from the 20-plus schools registered for the event to bring them up to date with the competition rules, format and structure. There was provision also for schools with understaffed teams. “Some teams just have two players, but we will allow them to play just for the motivation factors of the tournament. They will start with a -1,” National Table Tennis Coach Linden Johnson indicated at the Sports Hall yesterday.
It was also revealed that three teams from Berbice and one from Essequibo has confirmed their participation. Johnson said that the GTTA is still awaiting feedback from the Linden teams invited to participate in the tournament.
The schools contest was identified as the bedrock of the sport’s development and the idea behind this event is to build relationships while fostering proliferation of table tennis with an increased pool of players available to the association.
General Secretary of the GTTA, Godfrey Munroe, Director of Sport, Neil Kumar and one of the representatives from the Business School are among those expected to be present at today’s opening ceremony for schools’ tournament.
