Newspaper vendor’s husband seeks justice

Martin Atherley is seeking justice for his wife who died last September.
The man said that he was interested in having closure to his wife’s death.
His wife was newspaper vendor, 59-year-old Veronica Atherley, a West Coast Demerara resident, who died at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) on September 4, last after sustaining a gunshot wound to her hip on August 29, last. A licensed firearm holder had opened fire on two robbers and missed his target.
According to Atherley the businessman responsible for his wife’s death exchanges money on America Street. He said that the matter was in the hands of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) and to date no pronouncement has been made on the matter.
He said that the businessman’s wife offered to compensate him since his wife was accidentally shot, however, nothing has materialized. The businessman’s wife told him that until the DPP made a pronouncement on the matter then the issue of compensation would be dealt with.
He added that he wants finality into the death of his wife since it bothers him that nothing has been done to date by the DPP.
According to reports a businessman who was attempting to wound a thief who had snatched his chain, and who owns a licensed firearm, discharged several shots in the robber’s direction, but shot Atherly, who was sitting in front of her newspaper stand.
The DPP office was contacted, however but she was in a meeting and unable to comment on the issue.
